Lulu retains WBC super-flies title
World Boxing Council super fly champion Lourdes “Lulu” Juarez retained her green and gold belt, with a fierce victory by split decision, against worthy challenger Diana “La Bonita” Fernandez.
As the reigning champion, Lulu didn’t flinch, walking straight into the lionesses’ den, just outside Diana’s gate, at Gimnasio Municipal “Jose Neri Santos” Cuidad Juarez. Big sister and former WBC bantamweight champion Mariana “Barby” Juarez was in her corner, offering her support very vocally through expert advice. On the other side of the ring, Bonita’s older sister Karina “La Bella” Juarez, who had previously lost a DU to Lula, was on hand.
Diana boxed behind her jab for the first two rounds, using her longer reach to catch oncoming Lulu and advancing with sharp right blocks, as Lulu began to move towards the body.
In the third round, and as Diana continued to dance, Lulu, with startling confidence, put her gloves on her hips in a risky fashion and did a free jig, cleverly bringing her fists back to the right guard, just in time to undo. a rush to Diana.
In the fourth round, the action really started to heat up. Diana had parried Lulu’s left paw on her right arm. Next, Lulu launched a fierce two-fisted attack, pushing Diana over the back foot. On the next round, Lulu pushed her back again, this time on the ropes, getting to work enthusiastically, finishing the round with a right uppercut. At this point, Lulu was sporting a swollen bruise under her right eye.
Halfway through, Diana opened up and Lulu briefly shifted to a left-handed, landing right then left at the head, Diana firing back with comparable intensity.
Diana took a dive in the seventh round, picking up two rights to the counter. Then Lula caught her close to a big right hook, injuring her. Lulu then dropped her hands and stood directly in front of Diana for an intimidating moment of challenge.
Encouraged and stimulated by her corner, Diana was more aggressive in the eighth, causing a foot fight, dominated by Lulu. The same thing on the next lap, and Diana slipped, descending, taking the time to get up and regain her footing. The round ended with Lulu landing a big left hook to the head, looking strong and cooler.
On the last lap, Diana landed a good right to the head and several to the body, then slid again and came down. Lula’s counter attacked brilliantly. The ringing was almost inaudible, Lulu dropped her hands and received several more punches from Diana, who had not heard it.
The scores were: 95-94 and 96-95 for Lulu, and 96-94 for Diana. Diana had fought an honorable fight in front of fans in her hometown, but the assault unleashed by Lulu in the fourth and fifth rounds, which put Diana under great pressure, proved to be decisive. In the final rounds of the championship, Diana was tired and Lulu’s extra zipper and silence was noticeable.
