Sandra Oh is in deep, deep trouble
The streaming return of Game of thrones co-creators DB Weiss and David Benioff are just under a month away. The couple are executive producers of The chair, an upcoming Netflix series written and created by Benioff’s wife, actress Amanda Peet, which premieres August 20. Based on the look of the trailer released Wednesday, that’s about the only thing the two series have in common. The chair focuses on a scandal at the prestigious Pembroke University, which has just welcomed Dr Ji-Yoon Kim (Sandra Oh) as the first woman to chair its English department. (She’s also one of a handful of employees of color.)
Obviously, things have started badly. “This department is hanging by a thread,” remarks a school official as Dr Kim sets eyes on a group of protesting students, carrying signs with slogans such as “Pembroke Complicit,” ” Shame on you Dr Kim “and” Down with the Dobson. The latter refers to a professor played by Jay Duplass, who first appears slamming his laptop in horror upon seeing everything happening on the networks. social media that gets everyone in a spin. The trailer doesn’t reveal anything more, but the post isn’t the only thing that’s causing problems. Romance doesn’t brew so subtly between Professor Dobson and Dr. Kim, who happens to be his boss.
“I felt like someone handed me a time bomb because they wanted to make sure a woman was holding it when it exploded,” Dr Kim said at one point. Meanwhile, Holland Taylor is running around mimicking a bullet in the head and setting official-looking papers on fire. Hopefully the drama is enough to hold you back until Oh returns to streaming with the fourth and final season of Kill Eve, set for some time in 2022.
