July 23 = Deadline for Joshua vs. Usyk 2 rematch
By Charles Brown: Anthony Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn reports that July 23 is the deadline for the rematch with IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.
If the contest doesn’t happen on that date, they move on because AJ is due to fight twice in 2022.
A worrying factor in all of this is Usyk’s reported 22-pound weight loss during the war in Ukraine.
That’s a lot of weight Usyk has lost, and it’s unclear if he’ll be able to put it back on in time for the Joshua fight in July. For some reason, Hearn says he was unaware of the news that Usyk had lost the surprising 22 pounds. How could he not hear about it?
Hearn is always stubbornly determined to place the rematch in London, England, despite interest from Usyk (19-0, 13 KOs) and his promoter Alex Krassyuk to stage the fight in Saudi Arabia.
Usyk obviously wants the rematch with Joshua (24-2, 22 KOs) to take place where he can make the most money.
Some fans believe that Hearn wants/needs Joshua’s rematch to take place in England in order to increase his chances of winning.
Hearn wants Joshua – Usyk 2 in London
“It’s not true but it’s under discussion,” Eddie Hearn told iFL TV when asked if the rumors were true about Joshua vs. Usyk 2 taking place in Saudi Arabia on a fixed date in July.
“I got a call today from a reporter who said, ‘I saw a reporter was told it was a signed deal for this date.’ It’s not,” Hearn said of Joshua-Usyk II which is set in Saudi Arabia.
“No formal contract has been finalized. Yes, that date is under consideration and an offer has been made. We have other various sites and other various offers in place.
“Obviously it’s a financial split, this deal with Usyk. So the Usyk team, Alex Krassyuk and all these guys are involved in these conversations. They’ll also want to go to the most lucrative site.
“We would love to do the fight in London. We also appreciate that there is a lot more money for combat elsewhere. We will be making a collective decision over the next two weeks, and we are reviving all contracts and offers from various sites,” Hearn said.
Well, if you’re Usyk, you definitely don’t want to be back with Joshua in London again.
As the winner of the previous fight, which also took place in London, Usyk shouldn’t have to return to the same city/country as last time.
Charles Brun realizes that it’s impossible to arrange the rematch in Ukraine at the moment, but Saudi Arabia is a perfect place if you want it to be fair.
Obviously, it’s tough for Joshua with his career about to take a dive, but that’s how it goes.
It’s survival of the fittest in boxing, and if Joshua can’t hang on, you can’t be. artificially saved to meet his fate by placing his fights in London to delay the inevitable.
“Not necessarily, but it seems likely that it will fall in JulyHearn said when asked if the Joshua-Usyk 2 rematch would be moved to July due to Usyk’s situation having recently returned from the war in Ukraine, having lost a lot of weight.
“It’s very important that AJ fights twice this year, and that will only happen if we do a fight in June or July. So that’s the absolute threshold. I think the date of July 23 was mentioned This will be the absolute deadline to ensure he can fight again in December.
“So I think it looks like Groundhog Day. Two weeks from an announcement. Like I said, it’s being finalized. All offers have been reviewed, contracts are under review and we will make an announcement in due course,” Hearn said.
Hear ignore Usyk’s 22-pound weight loss
“Absolutely not,” Hearn said when asked if he had a plan B if the Usyk fight didn’t happen. “I’m not talking to anyone, I’m not looking to talk to anyone else. We know what we’ve been through.
“People are trying to get AJ to step down, and not. This is the answer. This is the fight, this is the fight happening, and there will be an announcement in due course.
“No, what did he say?” Hearn said when asked if he had heard of Usyk losing 22 pounds during the war in Ukraine. “How much weight Usyk had lost? It’s good news.
“That’s a lot of weight. I’m not sure this was reported correctly, but 22 pounds in a week? I don’t know but it’s a lot of weight. He went through an obviously difficult situation. We understand he’s training, he’s at training camp, and so is AJ, pretty much.
“I don’t think either of them have started their official camp, but they’re close to doing that. We’re going to finalize the fight and we’re going to finalize the fight and make a big announcement soon,” Hearn said.
Joshua is going to have additions to the squad
“I think there will be additions to his squad,” Hearn said when asked if Joshua would have any other coaches named for his side. “Obviously it’s a very personal decision for AJ, who he has in his practice squad, and he will be making the announcements with 258 when it comes to light.
“We talked about it a few days ago. It’s likely you’ll see some new faces or a new face within training camp, but that’s who AJ feels comfortable with. At the moment he is training very well and is in a good state of mind and he is ready to fight.
“My job is to make the fight, sign the contract, announce and promote the fight.
“The training side will be taken care of by AJ and his team and I’m sure they’ll do it well. I’d say around two weeks, yes, or maybe sooner. I think we’ll have some news before the end of the month of July.
“That’s the safest option, isn’t it?” The fight will take place before the end of July. That way I can’t lose,” Hearn said.
