Best Irish TV Shows: # 25-21
In September, here at Extra.ie we scoured the boxes to find the best tv shows in ireland.
Whether it is a series offered by our own national broadcasters or shows which sought programs abroad, there is no denying the cultural impact of Irish television.
This week we take a look at issues 25-21 of Ireland’s best TV shows.
25. Transformation of operations
Operation Transformation first graced our screens under Gerry Ryan’s leadership in 2008, though host Kathryn Thomas has proven to be a worthy successor since her passing. The show moves away from typical weight loss shows, aiming for a gentler, health-based, and more sustainable approach compared to other programs in the genre and has been a huge hit with Irish fans, especially after Xmas.
24. The fall
This gripping crime thriller sees Gillian Anderson as Detective Stella Gibson taking on serial killer Paul Spector, aka Jamie Dornan. A joint production of the BBC and RTÉ, the show takes place in the city of Belfast.
23. Young offenders
From a brilliant film turned into a TV show, RTÉ and BBC Three have answered calls for more Conor and Jock shenanigans and audiences in Ireland, as well as those in the UK, have done so. So good that even Roy Keane made an appearance.
22. The Clinic
The clinic has proven to be a launching pad for many of Ireland’s biggest stars, from Amy Huberman to Chris O’Dowd. The hospital drama became one of RTÉ’s most popular shows until its surprise cancellation in 2009 after seven seasons.
21. The wild eye
The hilarious skit took the form of a mock anthropological documentary produced by a British television station. The scripted comedy show was not afraid to bitingly satire many strands of Irish life.
Next week we will enter the top 20!
